Two centuries ago, the world lived in fear of a deadly disease called Smallpox. It didn’t matter if you were rich or poor, powerful or ordinary—this disease affected everyone.
People lost their lives, families were broken, and survivors were left with scars—both physical and emotional. There was no protection, no planning, and no safety net.
Then came a breakthrough.
An English doctor, Edward Jenner, made a simple but powerful observation. Women who worked in cow sheds—milkmaids—were not getting smallpox. Instead, they had a milder disease called Cowpox.
This gave him an idea that changed the world forever.
He used cowpox to create the first “vaccination,” a term derived from the Latin word vacca, meaning cow. That’s right—the word “vaccine” comes from cows.
What started as a small observation became one of the greatest medical breakthroughs in history.
Fast forward to today—smallpox has been completely eradicated, officially declared by the World Health Organization in 1980.
Think about that.
A disease that once killed millions is now gone.
The Real Lesson for Today
Back then, people suffered because they had no protection.
Today, we face different risks:
